Antonio de la Rua, Colombian singer Shakira's former boyfriend, spoke to the press in Argentina and Colombia this week and said that his legal situation is still waiting to settle a legal jurisdiction that is adequate for the case he has brought up against his former girlfriend and business partner.
De La Rua had filed lawsuits against Shakira in New York, Switzerland and Los Angeles. In every one of those legal instances he claimed that the singer had broken a verbal agreement that they had made four years before their romantic relationship started. In every instance, the courts have rejected the claims and have not accepted his petition for a lawsuit.
"The judge did not say that I have no rights to the assets of the singer. He simply mentioned that he preferred it to go on in another jurisdiction and not in Los Angeles because neither one of us resides in LA, and the court is currently saturated with cases and there are other places like the Bahamas and Colombia that could also be competent," De la Rua said in an interview with Colombian radio.
According to De La Rua, the commercial relationship between him and the singer began in 2004 when they both started a company with shared responsabilities. Shakira is responsible for the artistic aspects and he would take care of the business side of things.
However, according to De La Rua, in 2010 when the romantic relationship with Shakira ended she decided to to continue the partnership, which lasted for about one more year after which, he says Shakira abruptly ended all communications with him and unilaterally dissolved their partnership.
The first lawsuit against Shakira was filed before Swiss authorities but was dismissed in June. De La Rua's legal team then tried to bring the case to New York, but it was also dismissed there last month.
De La Rua's attorney William T. Reid IV said that Shakira will have to respond to these claims because "she is running out of procedural arguments and delaying tactics." De La Rua will seek to bring further lawsuits in whatever country is deemed as the correct jurisdiction for the lawsuit to go forward.
Shakira's former boyfriend also said that this is not a personal vendetta and that he is happy to see that Shakira has a family and seems happy, but this is something that he is entitled to because of all the years he worked with the singer.
