"Supernatural" season nine is shaping up to be another season of intense paranormal drama. According to Entertainment Weekly, Executive Producer Jeremy Carver revealed that at least the first three episodes of the show will focus on the after effects of thousands of angels falling from the sky. After the first few episodes the show will settle back into its normal format, with the Winchester brothers resuming their job of hunting a different creature each week.
"There are a lot of pieces to pick up. As we pick up those pieces, we're always introducing new things, but we're very much in the world of consequences of last season," Carver said.
On Friday, August 2, Spoiler TV released a photo from the set that shows Misha Collins as Castiel. Castiel will learn how to cope with life as a mortal after the fall of angels at the end of last season.
The upcoming season will also continue the "Men of Letters" mythology that was introduced in season eight. The Men of Letters storyline will even include a flashback. "We'll be delving a lot more into that," Carver said, "and in fact we'll be seeing the very first two hunters to ever be stationed at the men of letters bunker. That's a really, really fun episode we have coming up early in the season where we will be flashing back to 1935."
According to the Examiner, there have been hints that Felicia Day will return as Charlie during season nine, and that she is connected in some way to the Men of Letters.
This season will also introduce other new developments: Dean as a monster-fighting Doctor Dolittle. Executive Producer Robert Singer hinted that an upcoming episode will give Dean the ability to speak to animals. Singer referred to Dean as becoming "Doctor Dean-little."
"One of the highlights being Dean getting into a brawl with a pigeon," Carver teasingly said. "It's a logical progression from fairies to pigeons."
This season will also include a backdoor pilot in the 20th episode, creating the foundation for a spinoff series featuring composites of monsters and humans.
"Supernatural" returns on October 15 on the CW.
