The smell of burning rubber can be unbearable. The stench is so pungent and unnatural that its reason for vomit. To fans of "Sons of Anarchy," however, the scent is welcoming. It marks the return of SAMCRO. As the season premiere inches closer and closer, they gear up for what promises to be a loud and brash season, Sons style.

During last weekend's Television Critics Association summer press tour, creator Kurt Sutter, joined by stars Charlie Hunnam and Katey Sagal, hinted that the season 6 premiere may give some fans more than what they bargained for, according to TVLine.

"I've wanted to do that story for about three years. I know obviously that it would be somewhat controversial, but I feel like as much as I wouldn't do something because it was controversial, I'm also not going to do something because it is [controversial]," Sutter said. "It's an organic story to our world; thematically it's the right fit."

Sutter didn't specify the controversial "story" he's been wanting to tell, but did state that "there's a lot of blood and guts in my show - it's a signature of the show. But I feel like nothing is done gratuitously. This is a story that's not being done to be sensational."

"It is truly a catalyst for the final act of our morality play," he said referring back to the season 6 premiere. "It sets everything in motion for this season that will ultimately lead to the end that then will bring us into the final season and what I see as the ultimate comeuppance of everything in terms of the series."

A new promo also provides fans with a taste of what's to come. The teaser, titled "Mayhem," features Jax, Tig, Bobby and Chibs cruising past a giant wall mural of Clay, Tara and Gemma. But as the crew passes by, the image explodes into rubble. An ominous tone for what promises to be a troubling season. Check out the new promo below.

"Sons of Anarchy" returns to FX September 10.
