The world's favorite vampires are gearing up for another year at Mystic Falls. Well, not entirely. A handful will be making their way to college. They'll be embarking on journeys of bad decisions and higher education. The two go together nicely, like peanut butter and jelly. The dynamic of the show will change. While several members are off at college, the elders will remain in Mystic Falls. Their world will become bigger. Their lives richer. But what many fans wonder is how the separation will affect the newly happy couple, Damon and Elena. Luckily for them, executive producer Julie Plec has the answers in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Although the two will be happy together, for once, Plec explained that there are trying relationship conflicts ahead for Delena, "in which one is keeping a secret from another trying not to hurt their feelings, trying to make them happy, little things that any normal couple would fight about and then hopefully make up over."

"The biggest hurdles in their relationship come from external sources, people, ideas, notions that are trying to say they're not supposed to be together," Plec said. "It's really going to be more about them fighting to prove that they should be together and it's okay."

And what about poor Stefan who was left behind not only by Elena when she chose to be with Damon, but by Silas when he locked him up and threw him into the ocean? Plec tells fans that once Stefan makes it out, he'll be both the same and drastically different. That makes sense, right?

"There's a little bit of a riddle attached to that which I can't really expand on, but it's going to be a fun ride with Paul Wesley to play as an actor," she said.

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW October 3.
