Is Cesc Fabregas headed to the Old Trafford? According to UK publication Express, the Spanish midfielder has told the Premier league champions that he wants to make a move to the club.
"Cesc Fabregas has agreed to join Manchester United following a secret meeting between the Barcelona star's agent Darren Dein and Old Trafford chief executive Ed Woodward," Express reported.
The information has not been confirmed by either club. Manchester manager David Moyes addressed the issue during a conversation with Sky Sports and noted that the final decision will come down to the player.
"When good players are there it's right that United should go for them. I wouldn't say that they're desperate; Barcelona are holding on to him, and rightly so because he is a good player," he said. "I think it's down to Cesc at the end of the day. If he feels he's not going to get in front of Xavi and (Andrés) Iniesta then the move to United would be perfect for him."
Fabregas has remained on the fringes of being a major star at Barcelona. He was brought in to be the heir to Xavi and Andres Iniesta in the midfield but has been positioned as a forward partner for Lionel Messi. The latter role will be taken over by Neymar this season, leaving Fabregas in a precarious situation. Xavi is 33 years old and could be ready to hand over the reins to Fabregas, especially after Bayern bought Thiago Alcantara, the real heir to Barcelona's midfield. However, it is also possible that Xavi continues to occupy the midfield and forces Fabregas to start on the bench.
Meanwhile, Barcelona has remained adamant that Fabregas is not headed anywhere.
"I'm not going to involve myself in the club's accounts, but considering the club has already rejected two offers, I would guess it will reject a third. In other words, Fabregas will remain here," affirmed new coach Gerardo Martino.
"United are wasting their time. It took a long time for Cesc to get his dream move back home and he won't give it up. This is home, it is where his family is, and he is playing with his closest friends," added Barcelona defender Gerard Pique. "He has told us he is happy and that he intends to stay with Barcelona."
"We can assure you that we won't listen to any offers for Cesc. It is not an option. Cesc is non-transferable," concurred Barcelona's Vice President Josep Maria Bartomeu.
