The United States will head to the final of the 2013 Gold Cup after taking down Honduras 3-1 in the semifinal.
Leading the way was Landon Donovan who scored two goals in the match; he has now tallied five goals in five matches during the team's run to the final.
"I have told him in our conversations that 'I measure you. Your benchmark is the best Landon Donovan ever,'" US coach Jurgen Klinsmann said after the game. "I'm not taking anything less than that. And he is trying to catch up with that. Give him more games. Give him time."
"It's the most relaxed I've felt," Donovan added. "I feel good, and I'm really enjoying it."
His last two performances have made him the top candidate to win tournament MVP; the team looks unstoppable with Donavan playing at this level.
The rest of the team seemed to follow its leader as the Americans dominated the first half and seemingly overwhelmed a defensive minded Honduras. T
"The first 30 minutes was brilliant football. Brilliant, high pressure, high tempo," Klinsmann said. "We wanted to move the football around and create chances, and that's what we did."
The US took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after 45, but Honduras came out with intensity to open the second half. A 52nd minute goal gave the Catrachos hope, but Donovan responded with a goal one minute later to keep his team on top by two.
"In the end, the U.S. was able to beat us in every aspect of the game," Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez noted.
