Joss Whedon, the man behind "The Avengers," is hoping that his new ABC series is a similar success. The director told Reuters that he was excited for the possibilities of the upcoming "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD," which is slated for a September 24 premiere.
"'The Avengers' are the epicenter," he said. "This [TV series] is the peripheral. These are the people that don't get the big hammers or the gamma radiation and deal with things on the human scale."
One of the most talked about aspects of the show is the resurrection of Agent Coulson. The officer was struck down in "The Avengers" but is the main protagonist in the series. Whedon has a penchant for killing off major characters in his work.
"I have brought people back for a long time. One of my first jobs was bringing Ripley back, but do people remember that?" he joked about writing 1997's "Alien Resurrection."It's nice for a change."
The show is set in the world of "The Avengers" but works on a smaller scale.
"It's a world where people have gone from knowing about a billionaire with a crazy metal suit and there's been one or two Hulk sightings to this world with a race of alien warriors blasting through a wormhole and a couple of kooks from Asgard. It's a world after that," said Clark Gregg, who plays Phil Coulson."It's a roving, first-response team that is going to tackle old and new business of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s and -- I have a feeling -- of Marvel's...This is a show built around the people who basically are represented by Coulson in the movies, the people who don't have superpowers but have to deal in a world where superpowers exist."
"Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" premieres on Tuesday, September 24 on ABC.
