The Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Movie is one of the toughest categories in this year's Primetime Emmys. Four of the actors are previous nominees with one previous winner. The nominees also include two actors from the same film and portrayals of four real-life characters. It will be a tough battle and with no clear front-runner, the award can go to anyone.
Michael Douglass ("Behind the Candelabra"): Douglass received his fifth nomination for his work as Liberace in Steven Soderbergh's acclaimed film. The performance garnered rave reviews out of the Cannes Film festival with critics stating, "Douglas manages to take a real-life cartoon character and make him into a sometimes kind, often cruel, real person." Douglass' performance is based on a real character, which awards organizations often ejoy giving awards to. As a result Douglass can easily obtain his first Emmy.
Matt Damon ("Behind the Candelabra"): Damon received his second nomination at the Emmy. He was first nominated for his performance as Carol on "30 Rock." This nomination comes for his turn as Scott Thorson in Steven Soderbergh's film. Damon's performance also obtained rave reviews and was praised for his chemistry with Michael Douglass. Critics stated, "Damon has made an unforgettable character. Scott Thorson is unknown and he comes out of the dark as the story that needs to be told." While Douglass' performance is showier and arguably the lead role, Damon could easily steal the trophy.
Benedict Cumberbatch ("Parade's End"): Cumberbatch is having the breakout year of his life in film and is on the verge of receiving his first Oscar nomination. However, with this new nomination he has received his second Emmy mention. His role as Christopher Tietjens has already landed him several awards including the Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Actor.
Al Pacino ("Phil Spector"): Pacino is receiving his third Emmy nomination. He previously won twice for his turns in "You Don't Know Jack" and "Angels in America." As a result it seems unlikely he will win again given the competition he faces. Additionally, the TV movie "Phil Spector" received mixed reviews. However, he is an Emmy favorite and his performance as the real life character Spector received great reviews. Critics said, "Mr. Pacino's portrait of Spector is stunning in its guile and vitality." While pundits do not expect him to win, given his track record with the awards organization indicates that anything is possible.
Toby Jones ("The Girl"): Jones received his first nomination for his portrayal of Alfred Hitchcock. His performance was previously nominated for the Golden Globe and a BAFTA TV award. However, he failed to win either award. His film "The Girl" was aired last year and its lack of timeliness could mean that voters have long forgotten it about. Still, Jones may surprise as there is no clear front-runner.
Prediction: Michael Douglass seems to be the best choice because he gives the showiest performance. Additionally, he is the most nominated actor of the five and many critics claim that his performance is the best of his career.
