The excitement of Comic-Con is burning out. Fans rejoice in all the new material they have to tie them over until the return of their favorite series. Every big name was in attendance. The number of big names present was unfathomable. It's possibly the largest, most significant celebration of television and other walks of entertainment of the year. Now that it's all beginning to simmer, fans look forward to the fall, when television's biggest and baddest shows return.
One show in particular will be back for its final season. "How I Met Your Mother" has clocked eight heartfelt and uproarious seasons, but now it's all coming to an end. In anticipation of the final season, fans obviously took close to heart any details shared during Comic-Con, and there were plenty.
For starters, fans have long wondered how the entire season will span over the course of Robin and Barney's 56-hour wedding weekend. Co-creator Craig Thomas assured that many flashbacks and flash-forwards will offer "an escape hatch" to break away from the present-day narrative.
As Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Barney on the show, points out, weddings always "have lots of mini-chapters" that will keep fans engaged. Whether that chapter is a fiasco with the flowers or a problem in the hotel, they all serve the same purpose.
As many fans are aware, the Mother will be introduced to each gang member one by one throughout season nine. To Josh Radnor, who plays Ted, her presence on the show comes as a "relief."
The gang is a "tight-knit group of five," Radnor said, admitting that adding another character "could have been not great, and it's so great."
Harris also said that Radnor and Cristin Milioti have already filmed a scene in which they "have great chemistry together."
And what about the coveted slaps? "There's going to be an episode in the middle of the season that takes place in the middle of one slap," said co-creator Craig Thomas. "That's literally the framing device for the entire episode."
Harris, unfortunately, isn't looking forward to the episode. "They're like mitts," he said when referring to Jason Segel's hands. "They match his penis. They're not fun - either of them." What's not enjoyable for Harris will certainly be hilarious for fans.
"How I Met Your Mother" will return to CBS Sept. 23.
