Colorado Avalanche 2013-14 News Update: Matt Duchene Signed To Five-Year, $30 Million Deal

The Colorado Avalanche have signed center Matt Duchene to a five year, $30 million dollar deal. The contract was announced on Thursday.

"In 2009 I was thrilled to have been selected by the Avalanche, my favorite team," Duchene said. "I have worn this uniform with pride in my first four professional seasons in Denver, and I appreciate the organization believing in me for the long-term future.

"I have been working really hard again this summer, and I am looking forward to the upcoming training camp and season."

The forward was drafted third overall in 2009 and went on to be nominated for the Calder Trophy for top rookie during the 2009-10 season after putting up 55 points. The following year he scored 67 points, including 27 goals and 40 assists. Injuries derailed his production the following year as he only put up 24 points in 58 games. At that point, the center was given a two-year extension worth $7 million. In 2012-13, the center scored 43 points in 47 matches for the last-place Avalanche.

"Matt already is and will be a big part of our team's nucleus for the long term," Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic said. "We all felt that it was important for us to secure his rights for several seasons. With his great skills, speed and character, he represents the identity we want the Avalanche to be."

Duchene will be joined by 2013's first overall pick Nathan McKinnon. The two are expected to create one of the most potent center duos in the NHL for years to come.
