James Wan's new film "The Conjuring" opens nationwide on July 19.
The movie, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, tells the story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren who work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. During their work with the family, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.
The film premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and scored rave reviews. Charlie McCollum from the San Jose Mercury News wrote, "Working with cinematographer John R. Leonetti and editor Kirk Morri, Wan carefully crafts each setpiece so that each visual punch has maximum impact to a nerve-shredding musical soundtrack from composer Joseph Bihara."
Entertainment Weekly's Chris Nashawaty gave the movie an A- and stated, "Wan masterfully tightens the vise on the audience's nerves, using mood and sound effects for shocks that never feel cheap (the harmless kids' game of hide-and-clap has never been so bloodcurdling)."
Bill Goodykoontz from the Arizona Republic said, "James Wan proves himself to be moving quickly up the ranks of terror auteurs. The timing, pacing and character movement are outstanding. And it's scary as hell."
David Salazar of Latinos Post also enjoyed the film and stated, "The relentless pace, terrific visual storytelling and solid performances carry this film above the mundane and predictable product that the Studio system releases annually."
Wan is best known for his work on "Saw" and "Insidious." He has also directed "Death Sentence" and "Dead Silence." His next film "Insidious: Chapter 2" is slated for release this year.
Warner Bros will release "The Conjuring" in 2,600 theaters and is rated for sequences of disturbing violence and terror.
