A shootout over the weekend in Killeen, Texas left one officer dead, another wounded and the suspect also dead after fire was exchanged between the three.

Headline & Global news reports that the Killeen police shooting took place Saturday night when tactical officers responded to a 911 call about an armed man threatening residents at a pool at a local apartment complex.

According to the police report, two officers responded to the distress call at Grandon Manor Apartments at approximately 11:40 p.m. The suspect had fled the pool area and ran to a nearby apartment, where one of the officers attempted to negotiate with him.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, reportedly agreed to exit the building with his hands in the air, but then refused to come out.

After a short time, he emerged from the building brandishing an AK-47 and started shooting. Other officers who had arrived on the scene returned shots.

According to a report from the Huffington Post, the two officers who first responded on the scene were critically injured, while other officers involved in the shootout ended up killing the suspect. Both wounded officers were transported to a nearby hospital. One was pronounced dead by hospital staff, while the other was eventually stabilized.

"Early this morning, this community experienced the loss of one of Killeen's finest," said Killeen Police Chief Dennis Baldwin in a statement on Sunday. "The days ahead will be challenging, but for now, we are mourning the loss of a great officer. Our hearts and our prayers go out to the officer's family at this time."

Killeen officials have not yet released the names of either officer involved in the shootout.
