Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller are likely to remain in Buffalo for the start of the 2013-14 season.
The two Buffalo Sabres have one year left on their current contracts and have been the subject of numerous trade rumors. According to NHL.com, Buffalo general manager Darby Regier looks to keep the players for the start of the year.
"We've had some discussions regarding both those players," Regier told the team's official website. "Obviously they're here and they're part of our organization. Nothing's changed in that regard."
Regarding why he has not been able to move the player, Regier revealed that money was a major factor.
"The cap is a real big part of it. Any discussions that I have now involve taking back money, moving money. Money plays a very big role," Regier said. "I think you can look at clubs you wouldn't expect to be up and around $60-million-plus and they're there."
According to Capgeek.com, Vanek has a $7.1 million cap hit next season while Miller has a $6.25 million hit.
Miller is coming off one of his worst seasons for Buffalo. The netminder recorded a 2.81 goals against average and stopped about 91.5 percent of the shots he faced. He has a career goals against average of 2.89 and a career save percentage of 91.5.
Vanek compiled 20 goals and 21 assists in 38 games this season; the player has played all 585 career games for Buffalo and has scored 250 goals and 238 assists throughout his time in upstate New York.
