Mexico will look for redemption when it takes on Canada in the second group match of the Gold Cup 2013.
El Tri has been thoroughly embarrassed throughout 2013. The team, despite being undefeated in World Cup qualifiers, has only won one of six matches and has only scored three times. The team's lack of quality was exposed against superior clubs like Brazil and Italy in the Confederations Cup; these matches showed the world that Mexico is simply not ready for the pressures of the big stage. Prior to the Gold Cup, the squad was defeated by two Mexican club teams.
However, the greatest embarrassment came on Sunday in Mexico's 2-1 loss against Panama in the opener of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. While the Mexicans had their chances, the team never held a lead and was effectively shut down by a superior Panamanian side. Even though getting out of the group stage should still be no problem, the loss left Mexico with a chance of finishing second in the group. More importantly, the team proved that it might not be the top contender in this tournament; this will surely instill confidence in other clubs.
How poor Mexico is will likely be exposed against a weak Canadian side. The North Americans are in rebuilding mode and brought a club that is not ready for prime time. This was evident in the club's opening loss to Martinique. While that match ended 1-0, it could have finished with a 4-0 scoreline if not for Martinique's missed chances.
Prediction: As much as Mexico has struggled, the team will not lose this match. The offensive struggles will end for one day as Mexico tramples Canada 4-0.
