Placido Domingo has been hospitalized after a pulmonary embolism.

According to the tenor-turned-baritone's publicist Nancy Seltzer, the 72-year old is "expected to make a full recovery but will have to miss at least two appearances scheduled for later this month. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday in Madrid, Spain."

Seltzer also stated, "Domingo will have to rest for three to four weeks but that healing time will vary." She added that his "return to the stage will depend on how quickly he regains strength."

Doctors said that the cause of the embolism was a blockage in an artery in the lungs.  Domingo has already canceled his performances in Daniel Catan's "Il Postino," which were to begin July 17 and end on 28 at the Teatro Real in Madrid. He was also scheduled to appear on July 21 at Plaza Mayor.

This is not the first time Domingo is hospitalized. In 2010 the opera star was operated for colon cancer. He returned 45 days later and told CBS "I feel strong still. But you know, I mean, you never know how much more time you will have the voice. That's the first thing. But secondly, how the health will be and how is the strength."

Domingo has since kept a busy schedule and added more roles to his repertoire. He is still slated to make his role debut as Giacomo in Verdi's "Giovanna d'Arco" at Salzburg alongside Anna Netrebko. He will also make his role debut as Conte di Luna in Verdi's "Il Trovatore" in Berlin. The performances were sold out the same day tickets went on sale. Domingo is also scheduled to return to reprise his role as Neptune in "The Enchanted Island" at the Metropolitan Opera.
