Salsa music will continue to blast at MetLife Stadium after touchdowns, as wide receiver Victor Cruz has re-signed with the New York Giants.
Cruz's inked a 5-year deal worth $46 million, with $15.625 million of it guaranteed, a signing bonus of $9.5 million, and an additional $1.5 million roster bonus that will be paid the first day of the 2014 league year.
"It was fun to finally get it done with," said Cruz. "I was smiling from ear to ear the whole time I couldn't stop grinning. Good to put my ink on that piece of paper and feel good about it and feel confident about it and get back to football."
Cruz, a 2010 undrafted free agent out of UMass, made an impact on the team leading the Giants' wide receiver corp with 1,628 yards and 19 touchdowns in two season, helping the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI.
The Paterson, New Jersey native wanted to stay close to his family, signing the Giants one-year, $2.879 million tender offer - allowing New York the opportunity to match any offer - while a long-term deal was worked out.
"It was very important, not just for the team and the Giants, but for my family being from here, for the people from Paterson, for the kids who look up to me in this area," said Cruz. "All of that played a part into this and it was very important for me. I knew that in order for me to continue to be a role model in an exponential way for these children I would have to stay a Giant."
Cruz's contract places him 18th among highest paid receivers, exceeding the off-season signings of Denver Broncos Wes Welker's (two-years, $12 million guaranteed) and New England Patriot Danny Amendola's (five-years, $28 million, $10 million guaranteed) but short of Seattle Seahawks' Percy Harvin's $67 million deal.
"I think my deal is tremendous," said Cruz. "I think to be able to be in a top position as a slot receiver amongst the best in the league, I think it's definitely a great deal. You don't want to be anywhere else. I don't want to play anywhere else."
Cruz had skipped out on the Giants' organized team activities but is expected to attend training camp when it opens on July 26th.
"We are pleased to have this behind us," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said in a statement. "Now Victor can focus on football. Training camp is approaching quickly, and we all have a lot of work to do to get back where we want to be."
