Ever since "Blurred Lines" climbed its way to the top of the UK charts, fans and critics alike have been curious as to whether the veteran R&B singer got lucky or has found a new sound that will propel his career to new heights. Robin Thicke has long been involved in the music industry, but has yet to leave his mark. Perhaps now is his chance. "Blurred Lines" marks his first No. 1 single, but will he be left with a one hit wonder album? Although the album, also titled Blurred Lines, won't hit stores until July 30, Thicke has released the second track, giving fans an opportunity to get a better sense on one of the summer's most highly anticipated releases.
The track, titled "Give It 2 U," strays far from the funky and simplistic rhythms of "Blurred Lines," however, its lyrical content is one and the same. Thicke sings about beautiful the women that he hopes to "give it to" and how they share similar sentiments toward him. The backbone is a hard driven synth beat hopeful of becoming a club banger, but unfortunately lacks the explosive chorus that you find yourself subconsciously humming for days on end. One thing for sure, for an R&B singer, Thicke is surprisingly sticking to his earlier comments on the new album.
"It's almost all uptempo, fun, feel-good and happy," Thicke told Digital Spy. "'Blurred Lines' is the first song on the album and represents the sense of humor and the light-heartedness, and yet the soulful vocals that the whole album will have."
"Give It 2 U" was produced by Dr. Luke, Cirkut and Will.i.am and features Kendrick Lamar. The album version will also include a verse from rapper 2 Chainz.
The new track is the second song Thicke released prior to the album release. Although it may not share the same success as the title track, it reassures that Blurred Lines will be one of Thicke's greatest albums to date.
