After the unsuccessful "Terminator Salvation" film, the Terminator series will get a reboot.
Paramount announced that it would reboot the franchise on June 26, 2015 and that the film would be produced by Skydance Productions and Annapurna pictures. The studio however failed to announce whether Arnold Schwarzenegger would be involved in the project and who would direct the movie.
Last week rumors noted that Dwayne Johnson would star and that the movie would be set in the 1940s. Rumors also attested that Schwarzenegger would make an appearance as a man instead of as a machine, who protects an earlier generation of the Connor clan from a "time-traveling The Rock bot." The rumor also said that it would be Schwarzenegger's heroism that inspires the robots to design their T-800s to look like him.
The addition to the summer slate will make 2015 summer even more crowded. Studios have already set "Independence Day 2," and "Inside Out" that year. Additionally, "Star Wars Episode VII," "The Avengers 2," "Jurassic Park IV," "The Fantastic Four reboot," "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" and "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" are also set for release in 2015.
The first Terminator film was released in 1984 by James Cameron and became one of the most popular action films of its time. The film was followed by the 1991 hit, "Terminator: Judgement Day." The film won four Academy Awards and surpassed the popularity of the original. In 2003, Warner Bros. rebooted the franchise with "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." Finally the series had its fourth installment in 2009 "Terminator Salvation" but failed to catch with audiences and was given bad reviews.
The fifth installment marks the first time a Terminator film will be distributed by Paramount. Previously Warner Bros and TriStar were in charge of the franchise.
