The family of the late Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes was surprised to hear that TLC's hit single "Waterfalls" had been remastered, which had Left Eye's vocals replaced by Japanese musician Namie Amuro's voice for the track, eonline.com writes. "Waterfalls" was one of TLC's biggest 90s hits, being featured on their 1995 album "CrazySexyCool."
TMZ quoted Left-Eye's sister Reigndrop saying "I did not know about it until a fan posted it online." Their mother had been affected by the lineup change to the track, Reigndrop said. "I mean, it would have been nice if they would have given us a heads up before being surprised."
Reigndrop said that if the track remains in the Japan edition of a TLC 'best hits' album, she was fine with it. The track, named "20th Anniversary Version-Japan Edition" has since been removed from video streaming site YouTube.
The rest of TLC, 'T-Boz' Watkins and 'Chili' Thomas went on as a duo after Left Eye's tragic car accident in Honduras in 2002. TLC has since enjoyed a following around the world outside the United States, having gone on tours in Europe and Asia for the past years. Last week, the duo was in Japan, where Left Eye's relatives saw TLC being awarded the Legends award by MTV Japan.
The duo is also set to perform at the Mixtape Festival in Pennsylvania in July, their first performance in the United States since 2009. Meanwhile, T-Boz tweeted "@JKingOfOneself its a tribute TO Lisa in her lyrics...don't believe the hype" to ward off criticism of the lineup change.
