Mexican federal authorities moved former governor of Tabasco, Andrés Granier out of Angeles Hospital in Mexico City, where he was being treated for undisclosed ailments, to Federal Prison on Tuesdaym according to Mexican news sources. The former governor was admitted to federal penitentiary to wait until his court date relating to several crimes, including the illegal use of public funds, money laundering and tax evasion.
"Granier Melo was admitted to Mexico City's Eastern Prison in compliance with an arrest warrant issued by the Fourth District Court in the state of Tabasco relating to a number of crimes he is accused of," the Attorney General's office said in a statement. Granier is also under investigation for diverting funds during his administration. The former governor had been hospitalized in Mexico City since early June 14, for an undisclosed heart condition.
"Andrés Granier Melo reiterated his innocence and only asks the authorities for a fair trial in which all his constitutional guarantees are respected," his lawyer, Eduardo Luengo Creel, told Mexican media. Granier has repeatedly claimed he is innocent. After arriving in Mexico from Miami, he said he was back to "clear his name".
In May, Mexican media disclosed a tape in which an inebriated Granier could be heard talking about his lavish lifestyle to one of his acquintances. "You may not believe it, but I have 400 pairs of shoes, 300 suits, 1,000 shirts, and it's not to show off, it's because I like them and I look after them," Granier is heard on the tape.
The former governor was scheduled to appear before a judge to hear the charges against him on Wednesday.
