Netflix is on a role. Its Watch Instantly platform is slowly winning the hearts of television viewers worldwide. It allows fans to watch their favorite shows at their own pace. You can watch a series all in one, epic binge watching sitting, or to space it out over the course of a year. It's up to you. The Netflix bug is sticking, and now the network is adding new shows to beef up its arsenal.
Netflix has acquired the exclusive first run rights to Jonathan M. Shiff Productions' live action kids series, called "Mako Mermaids," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series will be available for streaming in the US, Canada, England, Ireland, Scandinavia, Benelux and Latin America. The series will debut parallel to the series' Australian premiere on Network Ten on July 26.
The show follows three mermaids who are burdened with the task of protecting their magical Mako Island from trespassers, but are challenged by a new arrival, a 16-year-old named Zac. Upon his arrival, he acquires merman qualities, threatening the mermaids. The mermaid population moves away, leaving the three guardian mermaids behind. In order to survive, they must find a way to obtain legs in order to make their way onto the island and take back Zac's powers.
"This exclusive first run-deal, and Netflix's commitment to the brand, is unprecedented - not just for children's but for any Australian program. It is a game changer," said executive producer Jonathan M. Shiff. "With the instant delivery of first-run series, as seen with their series 'House of Cards,' Netflix is an exciting and prestigious platform."
"This is an extremely significant deal for an Australian television program and reinforces that our children's television sector is highly regarded internationally for the high-quality content it produces," added Screen Australia CEO Ruth Harley. "There's clearly an appetite for quality Australian children's television content both at home and abroad.
"Mako Mermaids" will come to Netflix on July 26.
