Mexican striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, has tied Carlos Hermosillo as the third top scorer in the history of the Mexican National Team when he scored two goals in the recent game against Japan in the Confederations Cup, Mexican news outlets are reporting.
Hernandez reached 35 goals, surpassing Luis Hernandez (33). Only Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Jared Borgetti still outperform the Manchester United forward in the goal list.
'Chicharo' scored a penalty kick when the Mexican National Team played its first game against Italy in the Confederations Cup. Then he made a few more against Japan that got him higher on the list.
Hernandez could effectively end the year as the second leading scorer of the national team, as there still are at least four playoff games that would allow him to reach the 39-goal lead, currently held by Cuauhtemoc Blanco.
Hernandez has been called to 53 games since 2009, and he has been active in all of them, but only in 43 of those games he has been in the starting lineup. He has played a total of 3,835 games--which means he has scored a goal every 109 minutes.
Legendary player Jared Borgetti holds the spot for the all-time top scorer with 46 goals, a spot he earned by playing eleven years with the Mexican National Team while Chicharito has reached the third position in only four years of play.
Hernandez is projected to reach the top scorer slot by the end of 2014 if his current streak continues. This year alone, the Mexican National Team has four more qualifying games for the World Cup and a friendly match against the Ivory Coast in August, all of which Chicharito is scheduled to play in.
