The biggest cosmic event of the year has finally arrived. At around 7:30 a.m. EDT this Sunday, we saw the moon at its closest distance to earth this year.

The "supermoon" has been making headlines for the past weeks because of its apparent meaning to us earth inhabitants: a breathtaking view of the night sky. The moon's perigee, or the point when it's closest to the earth, coincided with a full moon making it worthy of the name "supermoon."

Basking in the beauty of the not-so-night Sunday sky, people quickly turned to social media to share their thoughts and photos of the beauty.

On Twitter, #supermoon quickly became a trend, while Facebook and Instragram had their fair share of images.

One moon gazer tweeted "Did anyone check out the #supermoon tonight? #amazing"

"The #supermoon looks awesome," wrote another.

NBC News' Cosmic Log shares photographer Mike Long's thought on the phenomenon as he took images of the moon from his third floor balcony.

"It was one of those moments where, after 30 years of photography, everything just comes together, and it's a nice surprise," Long shared. "That's what keeps you going as a photographer."

For those who missed the beauty on Sunday morning, don't worry the supermoon effect should still be visible on Sunday evening. Notably, The Christian Science Monitor says the effect will be seen in the sky for a few more nights, even until Tuesday.

For those who don't have a clear view of the supermoon, you can also check out SLOOH Space Camera's live stream of the phenomenon.

And if you're wondering when the next closest full moon to the earth will happen, you'll have to wait until August 2014 to watch the moon turn super again.
