Chile and Egypt will face off in Group E of the Under-20 World Cup 2013 on Sunday.
The two sides have had moderate success in the tournament and will look to reach new benchmarks in this edition.
Chile will compete in its sixth Under-20 World Cup. The side played in the competition for the first time in 1987 as the host nation. Chile went on to make its second deepest run in the tournament and wound up finishing fourth. In 1995 and 2001 Chile made its return to the competition but failed to get out of the group stage. In 2005, that feat was accomplished, but the South American side failed to get past host nation Holland in the Round of 16. In 2007, the team finished in third place; its best performance in this tournament.
Egypt is making its eighth appearance in the tournament; the Pharaohs have also qualified in three straight Under-20 World Cups. The team made a run to the quarter-finals in its first ever appearance in 1981 but failed to get out of the group stage in its second performance back in 1991. After failing to qualify for four straight tournaments, Egypt finished third in Argentina in 2001, finished in the round of 16 in 2003, and failed to overcome the group stage in 2005. In 2009 and 2011, Egypt made it to the Round of 16 before being eliminated.
Prediction: Chile and Egypt are entrenched in a tough group that also includes England and Iraq. Both sides know that this match could determine the second or third place side in the group. Look for both sides to play attacking soccer in the opening half but settle for a 1-1 draw in the second.
