Fox has pushed back the "Assassin's Creed" movie.
The film based on the popular video game which was originally scheduled for a May 2015 release was pushed back to a June 2015 date. The studio announced the news in tandem with the release dates for "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Independence Day 2." However the company failed to give a reason for the date switch. Pundits have started to speculate that Fox did not want to compete with the early summer releases of 2015.
Various established tentpole films are scheduled for that year including the new "Star Wars Episode 7," "The Avengers 2," "Independence Day 2," "Pirates of the Caribbean 5," "The Smurfs 3," and "The Fantastic Four."
The film is set to star Michael Fassbender who will also co-produce it through his company DMC films. According to Variety the plot of the film revolves around a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret organization with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts. However there is no confirmation on the plot.
"Assassin's Creed" is Ubisoft's biggest franchise, selling over 30 million units since 2007. Ubi-Soft is currently developing a fourth installment to the series and plans on launching the game with the next generation game consoles XBOX One and PS4.
Fassbender will next be seen in "The Counselor" and "Twelve Years a Slave." He had his breakthrough after starring in 2008's "Hunger." In 2011 he was nominated for a Golden Globe and British Academy Award for his role in "Shame." He has also starred in "X-Men: First Class," "A Dangerous Method," "Prometheus," and "Jane Eyre."
Fox next releases "The Heat" with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and "The Wolverine" with Hugh Jackman. The company will also release Fassbender's upcoming "The Counselor" which also stars Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz.
