As fans wait idly by for the "50 Shades of Grey" casting announcement, it's no surprise that they've become discouraged. No matter how much they beg for their favorites to star in the upcoming film, E. L. James and Universal Studios have remained silent. Despite mock trailer, rampant rumors and fan polls, nothing. Finally, after a spout of silence since the announcement of their plans to adapt the book into a movie, James and the studio have proven that the wheels are in motion. It may not be the casting decision fans have been waiting for, but at least it's something, and that's always better than nothing.
James informed fans that Sam Taylor-Johnson will be directing the "50 Shades of Grey" movie via her Twitter. She wrote, "I'm delighted & thrilled to let you guys know that Sam Taylor-Johnson has agreed to direct the film of Fifty Shades of Grey." Taylor-Johnson is best known for her work on the John Lennon biopic "Nowhere Boy."
"I am excited to be charged with the evolution of Fifty Shades of Grey from page to screen," Taylor-Johnson said. "For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika's book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too."
Producer Michael De Luca also joined the conversation. "Sam's unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia's relationship to life," he said. "E. L. James's character and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed and Sam is a natural fit."
Well, at least it's a step in the right direction. Now that the film has a director, perhaps a casting decision is close behind. Let's keep our fingers crossed, but don't get your hopes too high. It could be a while.
