Brazilian Police is tightening security in the city of Fortaleza (northeast), where some thousands of protesters are attempting to approach the stadium on Wednesday before the Confederations Cup game between Brazil and Mexico, local Brazilian outlets are reporting .

The Brazilian Federal Police is reinforcing five of the six cities in which the Confederations Cup takes place including cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Ceará and the Federal District of Brasilia, the Ministry of Justice said in a statement, without giving further details.

"While you watch TV, I change the country. Football no, we want education," reads a banner that denounces the 15 billion dollars of public money invested in the 2014 World Cup and the Confederations Cup which helps to rehearse and is held in six cities across the country until 30 June.

Alberto Craveiro Avenue, the main venue that connects the city to the recently renovated Castelaostadium, is lined with protesters, forcing local police to issue a blockade of vehicles attempting to reach the arena in both directions.

"For now it is a peaceful protest", a press officer of the police told AFP.

Other protests took place Tuesday in thirty smaller cities including Juazeiro do Norte (Ceará, northeast), where the police had to place the mayor in a truck for hours to protect him from a crowd protesting against teacher salary cuts.

No word yet if the protests will alter the game between Mexico and Brazil or any other Confederations Cup match for that matter.
