Her real name is Paulina Susana Dosamantes, but everyone knows her as Paulina Rubio,
Latin music's Golden Girl yesterday turned 42 years old. (Who would have guessed?)
After starting her musical career 32 years ago, she remains one of the most influential artists of her time.
Rubio was born in Mexico City on June 17, 1971. "La Reina del Pop Latino" first took the stage as a member of the 80's Mexican pop-rock Timbiriche at the age of 11, which then split up in 1991 after having recorded ten studio albums.
The Golden Girl then launched her solo career and signed a contract with record company EMI Music, releasing four albums that had significant success in Mexico. Her debut album sold a million copies and has been re-released in countries like the U.S. and Spain.
In 2000, Rubio began working with Universal Music Group, achieving recognition in America, Europe and Asia with the album "Paulina 2000," that sold over 2.5 million copies around the world a year after its publication. To the present, it has sold over four million copies, becoming her biggest selling record.
Her first English-language album was "Border Girl" (2002), that sold half a million copies in the U.S. By the time she released "Ananda" in 2006, she cemented her place as one of the most important singers in Latin America.
Rubio's biggest hits include songs such as "Y Yo Sigo Aquí", "Baila Casanova", "Ni una sola palabra" and "Yo No Soy Esa Mujer."
The Mexican pop icon has won several awards, including Lo Nuestro México, the Kids Choice Awards and Premios Juventud, and is currently working as a judge of the third season of the U.S version of TV show "The X Factor," joining legendary judge Simon Cowell, former Destiny's Child Kelly Rowland and Disney star Demi Lovato.
She also signed on as a musician coach in Telemundo's "La Voz Kids," alongside Prince Royce and Roberto Tapia. The show is the first Spanish-language version of "The Voice," which has already been a success in Mexico, Argentina and Colombia. Rubio was a coach in the last Mexican season together with singers Miguel Bose and the late Jenni Rivera.
So far, Paulina Rubio has sold over 20 million copies, making her one of the highest-selling Latino musicians.
