After "Man of Steel's" record-breaking opening weekend, reports indicate that the sequel could come as soon as next year.

According to a source close to the studio and the Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros wants to release the next "Superman" film next year. The studio already contracted director Zack Snyder and writer David Goyer for the sequel and is already in development for pre-production.

If the news is true then the sequel would have to begin filming in the coming months in order for the special effects work to be completed in time for a 2014 release date. Additionally the film would most likely not be a summer tentpole film and would probably be released in the fall.

The source also revealed that Justice League was in the works and would be released in 2015. However Warner Bros has yet to comment.

"Man of Steel," which stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, and Michael Shannon, tells the story of a young journalist who is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race.

The film scored mixed reviews with Scott Foundas from Variety  stating, "A humorless tone and relentlessly noisy aesthetics drag down this heavily hyped, brilliantly marketed tentpole attraction."

Eric Kohn from Indiewire gave the film a C+ and stated, "Instead of making a blockbuster Superman movie, Snyder has turned the Superman narrative into yet another modern day blockbuster."

Meanwhile Jordan Hoffman of Screen Crush gave the film a nine out of 10 and said, "If comic book heroes are our modern Greek gods, 'Man of Steel' is solid enough to stand proudly atop Mount Olympus."

"Man of Steel" produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and was directed by Snyder (Watchman).

It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language.
