Box office observers have started looking closely at how "Man of Steel" will perform on its opening weekend. Acccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and Legendary are trying to manage expectations by lowering predictions and suggesting that the film is on track to make a robust $75 million over the first three days.
However sources revealed that the studio is hoping for an $85 million to $90 million range. Rival studios are predicting even higher and stated that the film could easily open with $100 million or more over the June 14-16 weekend. One of the reasons they believe it will open so well is because they are comparing it to "Fast and Furious 6" which opened to $97 million. Online ticket service Fandango is reporting that "Man of Steel" is outpacing all previous 2013 summer films in terms of advance ticket sales.
Some studios disagree with the estimates and have stated that Superman has been away from the multiplex for seven years and therefore could easily fail to light up the box office.
In 2006 Warner Bros. tried to reboot the series with "Superman Returns," but failed to bring back healthy returns and ultimately lost money on the picture.
"Man of Steel" tells the story of a young journalist who is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race.
The new film was produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises) and is reported to have cost $225 million. It stars Henry Cavill (The Immortals), Amy Adams (The Master), Russell Crowe (Gladiator), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves) and hits theaters on June 14. "Man of Steel" is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language.
