Palace Malice wins, ridden by veteran jockey Mike Smith, shocked everybody at Belmont Park by crossing the finish line first ahead of favorites Oxbow and Orb, who finished second and third, respectively.
Belmont Stakes Preview
After scintillating races at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the time has finally arrived for the third jewel of the US Triple Crown Series - the Belmont Stakes, which starts Saturday.
On Saturday, 14 horses will gallop their way on the iconic race track of Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., but only one will rule the 'Test of the Champion.'
The 145th edition of the Belmont Stakes will feature the second-largest field for the third time in the race's long history. Moreover, this year's race has a number of interesting side stories to look over, the most interesting of which is the simmering rivalry between Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness Stakes champion Oxbow.
Orb, who is owned by Stuart S Janney III & Phipps Stable and trained by veteran Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey, III, entered the Triple Crown season with four consecutive victories after losing his first three starts.
Ridden by veteran jockey Joel Rosario, Orb easily bagged the Kentucky Derby by simply blowing by the competition. Orb crossed the finish line ahead of second-placer Golden Soul by almost 2 ½ lengths, clocking at official time of 2:02:89.
With this sensational victory in Kentucky, Orb instantly emerged as the horse-to-beat in the next two derbies. Unfortunately for Orb, his reign didn't take long as Oxbow pulled off an impressive wire-to-wire finish at the Preakness Stakes.
Trained by D Wayne Lukas and ridden by veteran Gary Stevens, Oxbow clocked 1:57.54 to make the slowest Preakness Stake since 1961. Yet, Oxbow's effort is enough to send Orb's Triple Crown bid crashing, extending the drought to 35 years.
With these results, the Belmont Stakes is set to become the final battleground for Orb and Oxbow to settle the score once and for all.
However, with a muddy track in place, anything could still happen on Saturday.
ESPN's horse racing reporter Jay Cronley predicts some surprises in store for Saturday's big race, including a victory from Overanalyze - which will be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John R. Velazquez. Unlimited Budget resumes its quest to become the first filly to win a Triple Crown race while her rider Rosie Napravnik tries to become the first woman jockey to compete in all three Triple Crown race in a single year.
