The Latino population is the most unhappy of the United States, according to a survey by consultants at Harris, CNN Mexico reported.
The survey was based on a series of questions about the calculation of general happiness of Americans posed to 2,345 U.S. adults who were asked about their happiness regarding factors such as relationships, health, leisure and employment status.
Of the total of surveyed citizens, only one-third expressed being "very happy", while the Latin American population showed a significant decrease in its happiness index in the last two years since it was previously measured. Perhaps this matter is influencing the debate on immigration policy of recent months.
The percentage of happy African Americans is 36 percent, 34 percent among whites, and only 28 percent of Hispanic Americans are pleased. Out of every other demographic, Latinos' happiness decreased the most compared to 2011, when 35 percent said they were happy at the time. It is noteworthy that of the 308 million people living in the United States, at least 50 million are Latino, according to the 2010 census.
Regarding the labor market, currently a smaller percentage of Americans think their job is frustrating (34 percent, versus 39 percent in 2011), which may indicate that many workers view having a job as a postive in the midst of an international financial crisis.
There was a curiosity in the results concerning the purchasing power, as 29 percent of Americans earning less than $50,000 per year claimed to be happy, while among those earning less than $35,000 annually the percentage was three points higher.
According to age, young people are more likely to be happier, as the segment from 18 to 24 years reported a 31 percent of citizens happy with their situation, while the range from 25 to 29 years implied a 30 percent, 28 percent for people with 30 to 39 years, 30 percent for 40 to 49, 36 percent for 50 to 64, and 41 percent for the ones over 65.
Finally, dividing the results of the Harris' survey into sex, women (35 percent) are happier than men (32 percent). And in politics, those who consider themselves independent are happy in a 32 percent, while members of either the Democratic or Republican are happy in a 35 percent.
