Montenegro has a chance to take over Group H of the UEFA World Cup 2014 Qualifiers when it takes on Ukraine on Friday.
Montenegro currently sits atop the group with 14 points in six games. The team opened its tournament with a 2-2 draw against Moldova; it followed it up with a 6-0 victory over San Marino. In its third match, Montenegro managed a 1-0 win against Ukraine on the road; the team also managed a 3-0 victory over San Marino at home. A 1-0 win over Moldova was followed by a tremendous 1-1 draw against England.
"I don't feel more pressure than it was before England," said striker Dejan Damjanovic. "We will not chase the result, but we will not stop and wait for the draw."
Four players have scored two goals for Montenegro in this tournament, including Damjanovic.
With eight points in five matches, Ukraine still has a chance to make a run at the first or second spot in the group. The team can earn a maximum of 23 points if it manages to win its final five games; a victory over Montenegro would pull Ukraine within three points of its rivals with one game in hand.
Ukraine drew 1-1 against England in its first match; the team then lost 1-0 against Montenegro. The Ukrainians turned their tournament around with two straight wins in their most recent matches. The team defeated Poland 3-1and won 2-1 over Moldova on March 26, 2013. Andriy Yarmolenko leads the team with two goals in the tournament.
Prediction: Montenegro won the first match 1-0 on the road; surprisingly, the team has played better on the road than on at home. However, look for the game to end in a 1-1 draw.
