The first images of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film "Inherent Vice" have been revealed.
The Daily Mail revealed pictures of Joaquin Phoenix in full costume in Los Angeles. The actor had a beard, long sideburns, and curly hair. He wore a straw panama hat and covered his eyes with sunglasses. He also had a button-down shirt layered under an "olive-colored" army-style jacket, and faded denim trousers. Additionally, he walked around set barefoot while he smoked a cigarette. Under his arm, the actor held a pair of tan leather cowboy boots.
The pictures also revealed Anderson's longtime partner Maya Rudolph. The actress donned green scrubs and slippers and also revealed her baby bump. She is currently expecting her fourth child with Anderson. The pair are also parents to Pearl, seven, Lucille, three, and Jack.
"Inherent Vice's" story is set in 1960s Los Angeles and follows the drug-fueled detective Larry "Doc" Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl. The film is based on Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name.
The film also stars Reese Witherspoon (Mud), Sean Penn (Milk), Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris), and Benicio del Toro (Traffic). Warner Bros will finance and distribute the film; "Inherent Vice" marks Anderson's first Studio film since "Punch Drunk Love" for Sony Pictures.
Anderson last directed the highly acclaimed film "The Master" which was nominated for three Academy Awards. He also directed the 2007 film "There Will Be Blood" which won two Oscars for Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Best Cinematography (Elswit). Anderson was also nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on the film. He also directed "Magnolia" with Tom Cruise and "Boogie Nights" with Mark Wahlberg and Julianne Moore.
"Inherent Vice" is slated to be released in 2014.
