This past weekend, we got the shocking news that Matt Smith, the current incarnation of the Doctor, would be leaving the show in just two episodes. After the upcoming 50th anniversary episode and the Christmas special at the end of the year, the 11th Doctor will presumably meet his end, regenerating with a brand new actor.
Many fans have become very attached to Matt Smith as the Doctor (just as they had with Tennant before him), so whoever is stepping in will have some very big shoes to fill. Here are a few names that have been cropping up on our radar.
Ben Daniels is an early contender, with many positioning him as the frontrunner. Daniels is a seasoned performer, having just appeared as Adam Galloway in Netflix's House of Cards. He's also recently had roles in the "Merlin" TV series, "Law & Order: UK," and the feature film "Jack the Giant Slayer."
At 48, Daniels is quite a bit older than any of the post-relaunch Doctors, especially the 30-year old Matt Smith. If nothing though, it might be interesting to see a more grizzled and mature looking Doctor, as it would definitely contrast with the high-energy, youthful portrayals of Smith and Tennant.
Russell Tovey is another choice that's being discussed, having starred on the long-running series "Being Human," as well as having a one-off role in the BBC's "Sherlock."Interestingly, Tovey recently starred in the feature animated film "The Pirates!" alongside former Doctor David Tennant.
Tovey's "Being Human" co-star Damien Molony is another choice, although his lack of a substantial resume may hinder that possibility. Meanwhile, David Harewood of "Homeland," "Skyfall's" Rory Kinnear, and even veteran (and always awesome) performer Idris Elba have been mentioned.
Ron Weasley himself, Rupert Grint, is also a name that's being tossed around. It would be an interesting choice, given the Doctor's insistence that he'd like to be a ginger for once, but personally we feel that Grint's a little too recognizable for the audience that would tune into Doctor Who. It's pretty hard to picture him as anything but Harry Potter's best friend.
We can lump Daniel Radcliffe in that camp as well, although we're sure both of them are looking for what their next big role can be after reaching such success so early.
Going past the early favorites, a few other names have also been cropping up. Hugh Laurie of Dr. House fame has been mentioned as a candidate, as well as Simon Pegg, who we think would've been a fantastic choice if he hadn't already appeared on the show in another role.
For a really outside pick (but an interesting one nonetheless), Benedict Cumberbatch has been cited by fans as an option ever since "Sherlock" landed.
Let's not forget the possibility of a female Doctor either. It's been mentioned in passing a few times throughout the series, but an actress has never really been a serious contender yet. With only two regenerations left to go though, now is as good a time as any if the writers are interested in the idea.
