The reviews are starting to come in Brad Pitt's zombie movie "World War Z" and they are surprising positive.

The difficult production of the film has been well documented with a re-write of the script's ending and problems between director Mark Forster and Pitt being among the top stories to dominate headlines. Many prognosticators thought that these factors would ultimately lead to a sub-par movie, but early critics have actually enjoyed the final product.

Digital Spy gave the film four stars out of five and wrote, "Diehard zombie fans may find there's not enough gore, no lingering close-ups of the undead feasting on entrails, but grossness is replaced by a richly thick atmosphere of constant threat. The hellish tableaux of cityscapes where the masses are made to look like colonies of bacteria blooming in a petri dish are truly horrifying, and Gerry is always an inch away from being swallowed up in it."

Paul Bradshaw of Total Film felt that the film indulged in excess, but noted that "Choosing quantity over quality, intensity over tension and big-screen thrills over low-fi shocks - this is probably what the zombie apocalypse will actually look like. "

Stefan Pape was a bit more reserved and gave the film three out of five stars. He wrote, "it's just not quite creative or original enough. That's not to say it's not worth seeing mind you, but before you discuss this amongst peers, you're going to have to settle on whether it's called World War Zee, or World War Zed. The latter will get you brownie points on this side of the Atlantic that's for sure."

The Daily Telegraph's Robbie Collins was adamant in his dislike of "World War Z" and bluntly stated "There's no heart to be found amid the guts. "

The film currently has an 80 percent approval on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

"Word War Z" hits theaters on June 21, 2013.
