"Homeland" quickly shot up the ranks as one of Showtime's more popular series. It takes a unique approach to the inner workings of the Central Intelligence Agency and has established itself as one of television's best dramas, winning several Emmys and Golden Globe awards. The third season is still a summer away, but that doesn't stop eager fans from digging for details on the show's future. There's plenty that can happen during the offseason, and now co-creator Alex Gansa has provided fans with an early glimpse of what's on the "Homeland" horizon.
Gansa recently sat down with ABC News' "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" and opened up about the upcoming third season.
"The issue in this season is, what happens if it were learned that a major attack on the United States was sponsored by a state?" Gansa said. "These are the big concerns that we're going to deal with in the first sweep of episodes."
So fans now have a subtle understanding of what to expect from the first half of the season, but there are still plenty of cards left on the table in wake of the season 2 finale.
"And then there's the big questions about, you know, where Brody is," Gansa said. "Does anybody know that Carrie helped him get out of the country? And will they ever see each other again?"
There have been other looming questions surrounding the season 3 production that Gansa chose not to bring up, but that fans are certainly curious about. Morena Baccarin, who plays Jessica Brody, is pregnant with her first child, which is due later this year. While fans revel in the good news, the show may have to take an interesting turn in order to accommodate. There are rumors that someone will have a one-night stand with somebody, but it's unclear as to whom. Jessica already has an unsavory reputation after being married to a suspected terrorist, so one-night stand doesn't seem too far off, however, there's no way to be certain.
"Homeland" will return to Showtime September 29. Read the official season 3 synopsis below.
"'Homeland' Season 3 opens during the aftermath of the horrific terror attack that decimated the U.S. intelligence apparatus, and prompted a global manhunt for the world's most wanted terrorist -- Nick Brody (Damian Lewis). As Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered professional and personal lives, they are swept up in the political and media firestorm surrounding the terror attack and the subsequent search for Brody's whereabouts."
