A new cartoon is set to break the norms of kiddie TV shows. The Hub will debut a new superhero cartoon on Saturday that features a boy-slash-girl superhero.
Wearing a purple skirt, pink gloves, white boots and a cape, 'SheZow' is a new animated superhero on the kids' cable channel. However, the crime-fighting girl isn't a 'girl' anymore when she's her normal self. According to the LA Times, in the cartoon, a 12-year-old boy named Guy uses a magic ring that turns himself into the crime-busting female superhero. Guy's go-to line as he transforms: "You go girl!"
"When I first heard about the show, my reaction was 'Are you out of your minds?'" the Hub Chief Executive, Margaret Loesch, told the Times. "Then I looked at it and I thought, 'This is just funny.'"
'SheZow' is following the trails of Green Lantern, but not too close. In the new cartoon to air on the Discovery Communications and Hasbro Inc.-owned channel, Guy doesn't seem to be a young homosexual. The kid lives like a typical 12-year old, he likes video games and skateboarding-that is until he turns into a 'her' and rides a pink car to save the day.
The Hub hopes that through this new cartoon they will be able to catch up on the competition. The channel has barely made any waves in the ratings. According to the LA Times, the Nielsen reported that about 56,000 kids from ages 2 to 11 watch the channel every day. Compared to Disney, Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network's average of 934,000 every day, the Hub's numbers are incredibly low.
However, according to the channel's officials, the channel is on the rise. The Times reports that the viewer figures have been up by 45% from last year and 75% from its launch in 2010.
The channel hopes hat through this new cartoon concept, more children will make the switch to the Hub.
