A town in Romania has entered the Guinness Book of World Records when they unfurled the biggest flag ever made, according to The Guardian. The flag, which took 200 people to hold, measured about 349 meters by 227 meters, or about the size of three football fields. The flag itself was made with 44 miles of thread and weighs five tons. The flag was made in a week, a phenomenal feat itself. Jack Brockbank declared the biggest ever made with a brief measurement and statement:
"It gives me great pleasure to recognize a new Guinness World Record title. Congratulations Romania!"
The flag was declared the winner based on it's area, which is roughly 79, 290 square meters, beating out a previous flag made in Lebanon. Clinceni, the town that created the flag, is located 22 miles southeast Bucharest, the capital of Romania. The day the flag was revealed was windy, and the volunteers who were holding the flag had trouble keeping the flag in place. Eventually, sandbags were brought in to hold the flag down.
The event garnered much fanfare and hoopla, as several key members of the Romanian government, including the Prime Minister, were present to inspect the flag and be there for the official announcement of the record being broken. A Brass band was also present to celebrate the proceedings.
Flags Factory, which is owned by Adrian Dragomir, created the flag. The Romanian flag consists of three vertical columns of red, yellow, and blue. No word on what motivated this world record shattering flag being created, though considering that the man who brought the flag into existence owns a company called Flags Factory, Dragomir may have been motivated to make the flag for the bragging right and national pride. Perhaps this news will motivate Lebanon to get their game together and retake the crown of world's biggest flag back from Romania.
