Jay-Z continues making moves with his new business venture, adding New York Jets rookie quarterback, Geno Smith, to his Roc Nation Sports roster.
"When you talk about being in New York from a standpoint of what they can do in the city, the connections that they have, I think it's a good move." said Smith to the New York Daily News. "My mother and my family were comfortable with it. I'm comfortable with it."
Smith joins New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Canó, Tulsa Shock point guard Skylar Diggins, and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz. Roc Nation Sports is currently looking into sign Seth Jones - considered to be a "can't miss" hockey prospect and the favorite to go first in the 2013 National Hockey League draft.
Smith hired the fledgling sports agency after firing Jeff Nalley and Eric Burkhardt of Select Sports Group, after reports surfaced that the former West Virginia quarterback believed he got bad advice from his agents, which caused his stock to drop from a first round pick to a second round pick.
"I don't want to shed too much light on it," Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "The thing that I can tell you is that it's not because of the whole draft experience. It's not because of one particular incident. There's a number of things. And that story, you know, that battle will be fought on a different day. As of right now I don't feel too comfortable talking about all the details of it."
Roc Nation Sports is a result of a partnership between CAA Sports and Jay-Z's Rock Nation, promoting themselves as providing "full-service sports management company" for athletes.
"Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years," said Jay-Z.
Smith said that the Brooklyn rapper's presence in the company or CAA's massive marketing clout did not play a role in his decision to sign with Roc Nation sports. Kimberly Ann Miale (who currently does not have any client playing in the NFL, at the moment) will handle Smith's negotiations with the Jets.
"I don't worry about the outside world's perception," said Smith. "I'm comfortable with who I am, strong in my faith. I know that this isn't because of an image thing or trying to market myself. It's just being comfortable with the guys who's going to represent me. That's ultimately why I made that decision."
