Gloria Estefan is not only one of the most famous recording artists in the Hispanic music industry, but she is also one of the most successful artists to be able to crossover to the non-Spanish speaking market. Estefan has inspired millions to move their feet to the rhythms of her music, but is seems she wants to do a little bit more than that these days. The Cuban born singer has joined the Ladies in White in their effort to liberate the Caribbean Island nation from decades of communist regime.

Estefan's first step into activism was a march she led in 2010 that took place in Miami, the city with the largest Cuban population in the U.S., where over 250,000 people participated. The march was also in support of the Ladies in White's efforts to bring democracy to Cuba.

The Cuban government has continually attacked the Ladies in White's activist group by calling them "mercenaries" and claiming they are not thinking about the real well being of the Cuban nation. But this past Monday, the Ladies spoke out against the claims the Cuban government made and stated that they are trying to "asphyxiate" their organization. This testimony was given in an event that took place in the Freedom Tower in downtown Miami. The Ladies in White condemned the practices and policies in the Caribbean nation and asked for monetary and material help.

The Cuban singer does not seem to be satisfied simply with her musical popularity. Estefan wants to bring political awareness to people and be part of the Cuban-American activist population. In the previously mentioned event, which was organized by Dade College, the singer also spoke. She condemned the current conditions in Cuba once again and wanted to the spread the "truth" about the events that are taking place on the island.

There is still much to expect from the Ladies In White member who was able to popularize Latin music across the globe. Gloria Estefan is still working on the reality show The Next: Fame Is At Your Doorstep and she is also working on a new album, which is expected to be released in September of this year. The album, named The Standards, will have covers of songs and collaborations with different artists, including Latin pop legend Laura Pausini. The effort that Gloria Estefan puts into her music and her political persona illustrate the importance she gives to everything she does.
