On Sunday while facing West Bromwich, Mexican forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez scored his 50th goal since first becoming a player for Manchester United in the summer of 2010.
The Mexican player scored the fifth goal 63 minutes into the action packed 5-5 draw against West Bromwich. The match was a hallmark in itself as it meant the farewell game of legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson. Chicharito's goal was the last one ever in Ferguson's tenure as head coach for Manchester United.
After the match, Hernandez, the former Chivas forward, lavished Ferguson with praise and spoke about the influence he's had on his career, describing him as "one of the best coaches in history" and "a gentleman who always treated everyone equally." Hernandez went on to say that one of the things he admired the most about Sir Alex Ferguson is that despite a record breaking career he never seemed to lose his hunger for victory.
It is still unclear how Ferguson's departure as head coach might affect Chicharito's relevance in Manchester United. Rumors have increased greatly over the last few months as to whether Chicharito will remain in Manchester. Several high profile teams have shown an interest in the player, including Italy's Juventus and Spanish team Atletico De Madrid. It is yet to be seen if David Moyes, Manchester United's newly appointed head coach, is willing to sell the Mexican forward since another of the club's top scorers, Wayne Rooney has requested a transfer for next season.
Chicharito's possible departure from Old Trafford will mean an emotional moment both for him and for the team's fan base considering the Mexican forward has become a fan favorite during his three-season stint in England.
Hernandez has scored 18 goals during the 2012-13 season so far, despite seeing less action on the field since the arrival of fellow forward, Robin Van Persie. Chicharito scored 20 goals during his first season with the Red Devils and then scored 12 during the 2011-2012 season in which he was plagued by an injury.
Of the 50 goals scored by Chicharito, 33 have been in the Premier League, 7 in the UEFA Champions League, 5 during the FA Cup, 2 in the League Cup and Europa League each, as well as his first goal for Manchester United, which he scored against Chelsea in the FA Community Shield.
It was on August 8, 2010 in Wembley, Stadium when Chicharito scored his first competitive goal for Manchester.
