Mark your calendars for June 11, because Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer are returning to Rosewood. As the "pretty Little Liars" season 4 premiere approaches, new promos and cast interviews provide fans with insight into episode 1, titled "'A' is for A-L-I-V-E."
In the "Pretty Little Liars" season 3 finale, an unknown culprit knocks an unsuspecting Toby (Keegan Allen) out cold, however he does leave a mysterious piece of evidence: a lighter that potentially links Toby to the fire at Thornhill Lodge. It's clear that the lighter will have greater significance in season 4, and Allen recently spoke to Alloy Entertainment about what exactly its significance will be.
"Interesting! Yes, the lighter will affect him," Keegan said. "I'm not sure if you were able to see but it actually has an insignia on it that fans are already trying to decipher. And let me just say they are so smart. I've sat down with Marlene many times where we read conspiracy theories posted by viewers and we're like, 'Whoa.'Sometimes, a fan will ask me something or make a suggestion, and I immediately beeline it to Marlene. 'So, I had a fan tell me this...' and they'll actually include it on the show. No other series has done this in the past - had social media as a train that drove it and our fans kind of write the show with us and respond to it with such amazing observations."
The insignia serves as a compass, but not in the traditional sense. It includes markings for north, south, west and east, but displays a fifth marking that points northwest. According to Wetpaint, the northwest arrow is a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's thriller novel North By Northwest, in which the protagonist, Mr. Thornhill, shares a name with the lodge that went up in flames in the season 3 finale. In the book, Thornhill is the victim of a mistaken identity, so perhaps Toby is framed for the fire. It's likely that his attacker leaves him unconscious and plants the lighter to cover his own tracks. But who is the culprit?
