Nine Inch Nails (NIN) fans might want to sit down first before reading this post. Eric Avery has just announced that he is quitting. The bassist of the rebooted band made the announcement via his Facebook page.
"It's with very mixed emotions I tell you all that I'm pulling out of NIN," Avery wrote. "I know. It's been a tough call and I don't know if it's the right one."
The bassist's decision was made just a few months after the band announced their scheduled 2013-2014 world tour. Now, NIN's touring lineup is in need of a new bassist to fill the position.
According to Avery, his decision was pushed by his "overwhelming" schedule and his budding career in the film industry.
"I really want to focus on my musical life here in LA, on film work in particular," wrote the Jane's Addiction founding member. "As the tour dates kept growing... I just got overwhelmed. I just got home from a year of heavy travel with garbage, the idea of leaving town for another year and a half, and with all the intensity that nails demands..."
Aside from the planned world tour, Nine Inch Nails are also scheduled to play at the Reading and Leeds festival on August, as well as the Lollapalooza in Chicago and the Made In America Festival this summer.
Trent Reznor, the only official member of the band and the brain behind the band's reboot this year, was already excited about getting on stage with NIN's new live lineup. Talking about the live shows and what the fans can expect from the band, he tells NME.com: "The intention is to reconstruct songs based on this new instrumentation and only play songs we as a band feel good about."
Avery noted on his post, however, that Reznor understood his decision and only had support for his friend.
"Fortunately my friend Trent understands all this and appreciated my pulling the plug now instead of deep into 2013 and 14. Go get em' gentlemen," the bassist wrote.
With Eric Avery leaving, the band's 2013 live line up will now only consist of Adrian Belew from King Crimson, Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, Alessandro Cortini, Ilan Rubin and Reznor. No word yet on who will replace Avery.
