"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest is looking to broaden his horizons as the host of a new show on Spanish network Telemundo.
According to the Associated Press, Seacrest will host "Superstar Showdown," a new music series on Telemundo that will air next season. While the network has not announced the start date for the show, there are already high hopes for its success.
The format for the show has obtained success in other countriesm and Emilio Romano, president of Telemundo Media, said he was hoping that Seacrest could use his connections and leverage to bring some top notch music talent for the series.
And while the network has usually finished behind ABC-backed Univision, Telemundo, supported by parent company NBC Universal , is hoping to continue its success after garnering its highest ratings in the company's history during the first three months of 2013.
"We've been the underdog for so many years and we've been given the mission to fight and fight hard," Romano said.
It is possible that Seacrest's new show could be part of an already-stacked fall lineup that Telemundo has in store, including five primetime novelas and a show called "Camelia la Tejana," the sequel to the popular telenova "La Reina Del Sur," starring Kate Del Castillo.
According to Romano, he is hoping that Telemundo can develop its own identity by creating telenovelas specifically tailored to the U.S. market, such as their adaptation of the Jennifer Lopez movie "Maid in Manhattan."
In addition, the network is also planning to host special event programming that includes a special on Billboard's Mexican Music Awards, the Miss Universe pageant and World Cup programming as Telemundo gets ready to take the reigns of the world's most famous soccer tournament in 2015, when they acquire the broadcasting rights for it.
In addition, Telemundo will be launching "Fluency," an L.A.-based production studio that will produce bilingual content in English and Spanish for U.S.-based Latino viewers. Plus, the network's sports coverage is expanding with the weekly show "Titulares y Mas" to begin airing all weeknights at 11:35 p.m.
