This weekend Warner Bros. will unveil "The Great Gatsby" in theaters nationwide.
The film, starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, tells the story of a Midwestern war veteran who finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor.
The movie based on the acclaimed novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald will open the Cannes Film Festival and premiered in New York to mixed reviews. It currently has a 44% aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Los Angeles Times stated that the film "On paper "Gatsby" sounds like quite the film. On screen, though, things start to fall apart."
Salon.com also disliked the movie and said "It surely belongs to the category of baroque, overblown, megalomaniacal spectacles dubbed "film follies" by longtime Nation film critic Stuart Klawans."
The New York Observer gave it one star out of four and stated "I love the publicity quotes by Baz Luhrmann stating that his intention was to make an epic romantic vision that is enormous. Also: overwrought, asinine, exaggerated and boring. But in the end, about as romantic as a pet rock."
Entertainment weekly said "For the most part, the actors never sync up with Luhrmann's jitterbug rhythm."
However a number of critics did enjoy the film. The Arizona Republic said "DiCaprio has aged into roles like this with a certain grace. He carries himself with the self-confidence Gatsby would, but also manages the shade of doubt, that it's all false bravado."
Latinos Post also gave it a good review and said "Style And Substance Fuse For A Solid Adaptation Of America's Great Novel"
Dicaprio was seen in "Django Unchained" for which garnered a Golden Globe nomination. Maguire was last seen in "The Details" and "Brothers" while Mulligan last appeared in "Shame" and "Drive."
"The Great Gatsby" also stars Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke and Isla Fisher. Baz Luhrmann directed the film, which is slated to be released in 3,350 theaters. The movie is rated PG-13 for some violent images, sexual content, smoking, partying and brief language.
