The third day of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs starts on Thursday and there will be some big-time matchups in store for hockey fans.
The Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 in part thanks to David Krejci's goal and three points to go up 1-0 in the series. The Pittsburgh Pensguins crushed the New York Islanders 5-0, with Pittsburgh goalie Marc Andre Fleury shutting out the Islanders with 26 saves. And the San Jose Sharks beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 in Game 1 of the series thanks to twin goals by San Jose's Logan Couture and Dan Boyle.
The action continues on Thursday when the Ottawa Senators take on the Montreal Canadians in Game 1 of the first round Stanley Cup Playoffs series at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This Battle for Canada features these two teams meeting for the first time ever in the playoffs. The Senators struggled with injuries to key players such as Craig Anderson and Jared Cowen during the season, but rallied to make the playoffs. And the Canadians captured the Northeast Division title, but was in a mild slump heading into the playoffs.
Then at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., the New York Rangers look to make a run at the Stanley Cup after losing a heartbreaking seven-game Eastern Conference Finals series last year, but they must first get past the Southeast Division champion Washington Capitals. The series marks the third year in a row that the Capitals and Rangers clash in the playoffs in what is beginning to become a rivalry between these two teams.
Then the action moves to the Midwest in Missouri, where the St. Louis Blues host the Stanley Cup Champion L.A. Kings. The Blues are up 1-0 in the series thanks to Alexander Steen's overtime goal in Game 1 on Tuesday. Now the defending champions are looking to even the series against the team that they swept in the second round last year en route to the Stanley Cup.
And in Anaheim, Calif., the Detroit Red Wings look to even the series with the Anaheim Ducks, while Teemu Selanne and Anaheim look to go up 2-0 after taking Game 1 on Tuesday thanks in part to Selanne, who scored a goal in the game. Can the Red Wings make it all even, or will the Ducks find themselves halfway to the second round?
