Tornado Week 2013 has started on The Weather Channel and as part of the swirling lineup of festivities, the station has thrown interns into the middle of a simulated twister at their offices, increasing wind speed as more tweets are posted about the event.
"Our Weather Channel interns got so excited about Tornado Week they wanted to recreate a Twitter powered Tornado in our office---so we did, and sat them right in the middle of it!" the station said on its site.
"Now you are in control of the winds. Every pubic mention of #TornadoWeek on Twitter raises the scale and boosts the winds. You can even Tweet at the interns using the @TornadoWeek handle."
If 1,000,000 mentions appear on Twitter with the specified hashtag, the tornado will be turned up to simulate an EF-5.
Right now there is a live stream of the interns sitting in the office while the winds are blowing at 127 mph.
As of this posting, there are currently 32,800 tweets about the Tornado Week event and about 17,000 more posts are needed for the twister to be picked up to an EF-Level tornado.
But aside from the windy office antics, The Weather Channel has a lot of programming in-store for Tornado Week.
"Tornado Week is the ultimate destination for wall-to-wall tornado coverage. During the day, the live team will bring you everything you need to know about one of Mother Nature's deadliest creations," the station says on their site.
"At night, viewers can turn into special tornado-themed episodes from The Weather Channel favorites such as Deadliest Space Weather and Storm Riders, as well as other tornado specials."
