May Day has a number of meanings worldwide, one of which is the birth of our American eight-hour work day. For those interested in taking part in any of the labor-orientied May Day rallies/festivities around New York City, here are five events being held in the evening on May 1.
Unified March for Immigrant & Worker Rights (5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) - Join the rally at Union Square for a march down Broadway straight to City Hall. The march also plans on drawing more attention to labor causes with a quick stop at Federal Plaza.
Rally for Labor & Citizen's Rights at City Hall (6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) - If you wish to protest the economic policies of Mayor Bloomberg and the NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy, this is the place. Arrive early, at 5:30 p.m., if you're interested in catching some live music as well.
May Day People's Assembly / Asamblea del Pueblo del 1ero de Mayo at Foley Square (7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) - Rally in celebration of International Workers' Day. Come out and support fellow immigrants, hard workers, and solidarity.
Occu-Evolve Kimani Gray Memorial Assembly at Zuccotti Park (7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) - The assembly will focus on a number of issues facing New Yorkers, including Hurricane Sandy, Latino and Black racial concerns, and Occupy Wall Street.
Dance Your Debt Away! at Washington Square Park (9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) - Simple. Come dance in, around, on, or through the famous downtown park's fountain.
