The animal rights group PETA  launched a controversial bilingual campaign to raise awareness among Hispanics about the health dangers and concerns of eating meat.

The strategy created internet buzz  because PETA choose to have a naked actress on top of a gigantic broccoli to send a message among latinos.

"Our overall goal is to create awareness within the Latino community about the health problems related to eating meat," said PETA Latino National Director Renée Saldaña to Latinos Post.

PETA Latino started their Spanish campaign with actress Patricia De León posing nude on top of a giant broccoli over the words, "eat your vegetables, they're very tasty."

"The campaign having Patricia naked is part of the PETA strategy to create impact, the kind of impact we need to send the message to latino households," Saldaña said.

The web site PETALatino.com serves as the premier source of vegan and animal rights information for the quickly growing population of bilingual and bicultural Latinos.

Additionally visitors can find dual-language tips on how to combat obesity.

The hispanic campaign also has the backing of Latino celebs including Eva Mendes, Kate del Castillo and Penélope Cruz, Roselyn Sanchez and Wilmer Valderrama.

Eating meat is very ingrained in Latin American culture, and Hispanics carry on that tradition in the United States. That is why the new PETA initiative may face an uphill battle convincing Hispanics to abandon meat in large numbers.

"If the Latino moms can start replacing the 'chorizo' with a vegan diet they will notice the improvement on their kids health," Saldaña said.

According to the American Diabetes Association Hispanics face a growing problem with obesity and diabetes rates almost double those of non-Latino whites.
